Great memories. Lots of disgruntlement with the trains off in 82 and 83. Got the AEC80 push pull into town day it launched. Harmo to Connolly. Reuturned on a DART. Out took 20 mins. Back was 8 mins. Also remember the super spring loaded jump seats at the door.

What a terrific video! It was fascinating to hear about some of the issues involved in its planning and construction - I'm old enough to remember the excitement leading up to the first DARTS. It was a really strong team effort - glad to say that it proved the begrudgers wrong and was the catalyst for a radical change in public and political opinion concerning the merits or otherwise of public transport in Ireland. As already mentioned by other commenters, it will be great to see it continue to develop and flourish. Thanks to all at IE.

11:40 in the future, I very much look forward to seeing the DART being extended to Navan with the extension of the M3 Parkway line and a DART Underground from the Irish Ferries & Stena Terminals at Dublin Port via Dublin Docklands rail station, linking in with a Metro Line from Dublin Airport, with the DART Underground going via the 02 Arena to Connolly Station

10:53 the lack of regulation was probably a good thing - looking at the failure of HS2 here in the U.K. one of the reasons it failed was because of excessive levels of regulation and restrictive trade Union practices, which in addition to holding back progress, which also is a possible reason for constant industrial actions on the U.K.’s railways, which also prevented the high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin from ever getting past the planning phase

You can blame the unions for your 5-day week, your sick pay, your workplace safety. Unions are a force for good, what ruins UK projects has generally been the tories

Main reason for its failure is the insistance on zero risk contracts by the Tories which inevitably lead to all contractors billing for the maximum possible cost in a worst case scenario in order to cover their ass from this government policy. If the government says the price is fixed and there will be no renegotiations on price then your contract will bill them for a build during a global oil crisis in a pandemic during rampant inflation, and a labour shortage multiplied by ten to be SURE you don't bankrupt yourself even though that likely isn't gonna all happen. Ofc the cost ballooned. Sure some sections are bound to break budget but the Tory plan meant all sections in practice broke budget.

you will never see an 'emotional' self-worshipping video of the engineers agenda to close all the lines West of the Shannon in the late 1980s in which is why the 'real railwaymen' moved the station in Athlone across the river thereby purposefully marooning the Mullingar - Athlone segment. It was a cynical engineering 'solution' to killing off most of the rail network by intent.
